Hull City’s overspend could delay Leeds United’s plans to move on Joe Gelhardt, with the promoted club racing to sell players before one July to avoid a possible points deduction.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Hull’s Wembley play-off final win set up a Premier League reunion with near-neighbours Leeds in 2026/27, but owner Acun Ilicali told supporters earlier in June that the club had overspent and must raise funds through sales before one July to steer clear of a potential sanction.

Leeds encountered a similar squeeze after losing their own Wembley final, selling Archie Gray to Spurs for £40m ahead of the Profitability and Sustainability Rules reporting deadline.

With Hull concentrating on outgoings to redress the books, incoming deals will almost certainly be paused, including any bid to make Gelhardt’s loan permanent. The forward scored 10 before Christmas, an injury then disrupted his campaign and he added four more before the play-offs.

He also netted the goal that made safe the play-off semi-final victory over Millwall, ensuring a Wembley final against Middlesbrough.

He finished with 15 goals and five assists, form that might persuade Hull to take him into their Premier League survival fight. Gelhardt, 24, has one year left on his Leeds deal and a permanent exit is all but inevitable after three loans in three years, while possible summer departures also include Max Wober, who also has one year remaining, Largie Ramazani and Isaac Schmidt.
