FIFA-mandated three-minute hydration breaks, introduced for the first time across the 2026 World Cup at the midpoint of each half, have been booed in some stadiums.

The stoppages let players rehydrate and some broadcasters run adverts. One British supporter told the BBC he viewed it as the Americanisation of football and said he joined the jeers, while another described it as an ad break rather than a drinks pause.

Discontent was audible during England-Croatia, which finished 4-2 on Wednesday at the AT & T in Arlington, Texas. Similar boos were heard during Ghana-Panama, a 1-0 match at Toronto Stadium.

Players have also pushed back. Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk has suggested each match should be assessed individually rather than applying the breaks by default.

The unusual stoppages have stirred debate in football circles, across media and on social platforms, and have frustrated many in the stands.
