Romero and centre-back partnerLisandro Martinez faced criticism from former England defender Neville ahead of the game, who described them as 'the best, worst centre-half pairing in the world'.

Neville praised the duo individually for their front-footed defending, but said Romero and Martinezoften leave each other exposed as a pairing.

Romero and Martinez helped Argentina past England in a huge fixture, sealing a second straight World Cup final appearance. The latter stood out for the holders, as he made 10 clearances, won seven defensive duels, and completed 96.2% of his passes.

After Argentina's win, Romero said he hopes he would not be so 'stupid' to make comments on current players when he retires from the game.

"The only thing that I hope for is that when I retire, I am not that stupid. Hopefully I won't criticise a player or anyone," theTottenham Hotspur captain told DSports.

"Because at the end of the day, we are doing our best for our national team. Sometimes it goes right for us, sometimes badly, but we are just happy to be in aWorld Cup final again.

"I think we are making history, for us it is something really huge, and we feel the significance of this shirt like no-one else."

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez, who has faced scrutiny during his Premier League career, said he will continue to prove people wrong on the pitch.

"We're used to people always talking about us. It seems like they like doing it, and we respond on the pitch, that's it, always with respect."
