Rotherham United's FLW fan pundit shares their view on Matt Hamshaw and whether he has bought himself more time
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Rotherham United have bounced back from a dreadful run of form with a draw against high-flying Bradford City, followed by an impressive away win at Northampton Town, with pressure on manager Matt Hamshaw having been alleviated for now.
It has been a tricky start to the season for the Millers, with three wins, two draws, and six defeats in their opening 11 games, seeing them sit in the League One relegation zone, with only Peterborough United and Blackpool separating them from the bottom.
In truth, it's been a difficult past couple of years for Rotherham, who, after being relegated rock-bottom of the Championship in 2024, finished 13th in League One last season, and replaced former manager Steve Evans with the Rotherham-born Hamshaw.
Since taking charge at the New York Stadium, Hamshaw has a record of nine wins, four draws and ten losses, with pressure from fans having become increasingly prominent.
With one win in nine league matches before their victory at Northampton Town, Hamshaw's job was under tension, but following victory last weekend, it may have just bought him some precious time.
Football League World's Rotherham fan pundit, Tom, has shared his views on whether Matt Hamshaw has bought himself some more time following the positive recent results.
Tom said: "I think he's given himself a lot of time now. I think these last three games against top-of-the-league Bradford and coming back from losing to win against Northampton show Matt Hamshaw has a plan, and his plan is good.
"His plan isn't perfect as of yet, but it's a young, naive team that is trying to get points together and be better.
"So, for me, I think that it gives him a lot of time, because now you can clearly see that there is a plan, and there is a method in the madness of what's going on.
"I believe that he gives himself a lot of opportunity here to really kick on, especially now that he has players coming back in Sam Nombe, Sean Ragget isn't far away, and Thomas Holmes coming back.
"He's given himself a huge respite in regards to what he is proving to the fans and what he is proving to the chairman as well."
Hamshaw may just have bought himself some more time with Saturday's win over Northampton, but the record remains that this season's performances and results simply haven't been good enough so far.
The Englishman must do everything within his power to build upon their most recent result and attempt to string together a good run of form, which will drag them out of the relegation zone.
The aforementioned Nombe, Raggett and Holmes are all due to return from injury soon, and just as well, with Rotherham in need of much more than just one victory to get fans off Hamshaw's back.
Up next for the Millers is a home tie against Leyton Orient, who themselves have struggled for form this campaign, despite reaching the play-off final last season, and will be delighted to have retained the services of manager Richie Wellens following links to Luton Town.
Rotherham's season is not even a quarter of the way through, meaning there is still more than enough time to turn their campaign around, or more specifically, Hamshaw.
