Former Premier League icon Djibril Cisse has hit back at Wayne Rooney over his claims that QPR intentionally handed the top-flight title to Manchester City in 2012.
The French striker, who was part of the Queens Park Rangers side famously defeated 3–2 at the Etihad Stadium on the final day of the 2011/12 Premier League season, has publicly refuted Rooney’s recent suggestions.
The Manchester United legend had alleged that QPR players relaxed once they learned they were safe from relegation, effectively gifting Manchester City the chance to complete their comeback and secure the title in injury time.
The infamous match – which produced Sergio Aguero’s legendary 93:20 winner – remains one of the defining moments in Premier League history, as Manchester City lifted their first title of the modern era in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.
However, more than a decade later, Wayne Rooney’s insinuations have reignited debate around QPR’s approach towards the contest in those final few minutes, leading to a sharp response from Cisse.
Speaking during a new interview with FourFourTwo, Djibril Cisse has hit back at the Manchester United legend following his claims that the London side had intentionally handed City the league title during the dramatic defeat.
“I’m not going to take this accusation any longer,” Cisse responded regarding his on-field celebrations with Samir Nasri following Sergio Aguero’s last-minute winning strike at the Etihad Stadium.
“I was celebrating with Samir Nasri. I didn’t celebrate with Mario Balotelli, Sergio Aguero or anybody else. I celebrated with my brother, Samir, a friend of mine for 15 years. I was happy for my friend and also that we managed to stay up,” Cisse continued.
“I don’t care about Man City. My friend finally won the Premier League after many years in England and I was happy for him and for me. That’s all.”
Continuing on the claims of handing City the league title, Cisse said, “What Rooney said isn’t cool. He took out his frustrations on me. It’s not my fault.
“If we wanted Man City to win the league, would it not have been a little risky to have waited until the very last minute to let them score? We could have let them win 4–0 or 5–0 and gone home.
“But we played a strong team, the manager wanted to win that game. It wasn’t our reserve team.”
The 2012 finale remains one of the most iconic chapters in Premier League folklore; a moment that redefined Manchester City’s modern era and sparked a decade of domestic dominance under Sheikh Mansour’s ownership.
Yet, for some involved that day, the emotional weight still lingers. While Cisse’s comments appear to put the controversy to bed, Wayn Rooney’s version of events has once again highlighted the lasting rivalry between the two Manchester clubs, even years after their defining title battles.
Manchester City supporters, however, are unlikely to mind given that Sergio Aguero’s winner remains immortal, celebrated annually across the blue half of Manchester as the goal that changed the trajectory of the Etihad Stadium side forever.
