Beth Mead has had a brilliant 2025 both collectively and individually, and she reflected on it after getting the winning goal for Arsenal in a 1-0 win over FC Twente in the Women’s Champions League this week.
Mead has won the Euros with England and the Champions League with Arsenal this year, and she said she feels very fortunate.
“I feel very, very lucky. I have won a Euros and a Champions League this year, not many people can say that. Obviously, the [other] girls I play with [can]! But there’s not many other people that can say that. It’s been an enjoyable year of football.
“Obviously it comes with its ups and downs. That’s what football gives you. But you’ve got to celebrate and remember the (good) moments throughout the year. And yeah, I’ll definitely be remembering those ones.”
Arsenal have three games left in 2025, one of which is a UWCL game. They are currently sixth in the table, on nine points after five games.
They face a battle for the automatic qualification places. Only the top four teams qualify automatically, and the teams between fifth and 12th have to compete in a two-legged knockout phase play-off to book their place in the knockout rounds.
Reflecting on the win over Twente, Mead said: “I think it was a good performance, I thought we dominated. Maybe we could have been more ruthless in front of goal, but good to get the three points. The girls put a good shift in and the girls that came on the pitch also put a good shift in, and got it over the line with us.”
The new format in the UWCL was introduced for this season, and mirrors the new format that the men’s competition introduced last season.
Asked what she has made of it so far, Mead said: “It makes it exciting for the neutral, doesn’t it? There’s a lot of tough games in it now. From week to week, you don’t know who or what you’re getting, which is great. It’s great for everyone to play in competitive games.
“There’s not crazy score-lines. It’s difficult, it’s competitive and it’s nice to play in.”
