FC Lorient head coach Olivier Pantaloni has confirmed he’ll not extend his stay in Morbihan upon the expiry of his contract in June. Despite a remarkable record in two seasons in Lorient – with a Ligue 2 title in 2025 and a very strong Ligue 1 season so far – Pantaloni has turned down the club’s proposition for a contract renewal, citing to Ouest-France the club executives’ distrust in his capacities since his appointment in 2024.
“I had accepted the challenge, which was fantastic, because I felt capable of it. But I signed under conditions which clearly showed there were many doubts about me, that the management wasn’t very sure of their choice“, Pantaloni said. The 59-year-old added he was very disappointed when, on the back of Lorient’s Ligue 2 title last summer, the club turned him down regarding a contract extension.
According to Pantaloni, the Black Knight-owned Ligue 1 club offered Pantaloni a new contract, which included a termination clause, despite the team being on a 12-game long unbeaten streak. Talks resumed in April, but the clause remained. Pantaloni was then given a 24-hour ultimatum to accept or reject the club’s offer. He rejected it.
“There’s a lot of disappointment“, Pantaloni says. “I had two wonderful years here. I think I had excellent relationships with everyone involved with the club. It’s a shame it’s come to this (…) But I still feel that distrust, and that’s why I refuse to work in those conditions.” With six Ligue 1 games to spare, Lorient are ninth in the league standings. They’ll play Lyon away on Sunday.
