The explosive Marc Cucurella interview with the Athletic is a gift that keeps on giving in a quiet international break.
The full back spoke very openly on how he thought Chelsea’s lack of experience had hurt them against PSG in the Champions League, and how the club’s youth based transfer policy was making some players consider their futures.
He also covered the decision to sack Enzo Maresca, saying it had cost his team a lot of the hard work they had put in over the last 18 months.
“The moment Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. These are decisions taken by the club. If you asked me, I would not have made this decision,” Cucurella said.
“To make a change like that, the best thing is to wait until the end of the season. You would give everyone, the players and the new manager, time to get ready, have a full pre-season…
“The instability around the club comes from this, in a nutshell. We had a caretaker first, then a new manager, with new ideas and no time to work on them. It is what it is.”
Cucurella also compared Maresca to Mikel Arteta, pointing out how much it had helped the Arsenal manager to stay in his job for a few years.
