Celta de Vigo have confirmed that Iago Aspas will stay for one more season, announcing the renewal in a social media video. The announcement followed a lunch with Marián Mouriño and Marco Garcés.
The move had been labelled imminent since Tuesday, though suspense lingered for a couple of days. The extension keeps the club’s record appearance maker and scorer in place for 2026/27, taking him to within two months of his 40th birthday. Qualification for Europe next season, still to be settled between the Europa League and Conference, was a prerequisite for him to continue.
On Sunday, speaking on the pitch, he said a decision would be taken that suited both him and the club before celebrations began. Celta have planned a marathon day at Balaídos on Saturday with concerts, food and activities, an occasion that might have felt flat had the striker been saying goodbye against Sevilla, his former club with whom he lifted the Europa League and scored against Celta.
Beyond fitness and personal circumstances, several motivations have helped shape his choice. The potential return of Deportivo and the derby to the top flight, the completion of the Gol stand and the chance to lift a trophy as captain were among the attractions.
This season his role diminished under Claudio Giráldez. He has logged 1,981 minutes across 47 matches, with eight goals and six assists. Across his career he leads Celta with 571 appearances and 222 goals, owns five Zarra trophies spanning 2012, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022, and has four La Liga player of the month awards.
He ranks 18th in La Liga’s all-time scoring list on 170 goals, ahead of Samuel Eto'o, Luis Aragonés and Puskas. His 2026/27 epilogue remains to be written. A bronze statue commissioned by the city council is nearing completion and he will keep Balaídos as home.
