Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate has confirmed that he is close to signing a new deal, ending speculation about his future.
Konate’s current deal ends this summer, leading to rumours that he could leave as a free agent.
He was linked with Real Madrid, but they informed Liverpool that they would not pursue a deal for him.
Liverpool are now unlikely to sign a new centre-back this summer as they have enough depth in that position.
Konate, Virgil van Dijk, Giovanni Leoni, Jeremy Jacquet and Joe Gomez will be Liverpool’s central defensive options next season.
Liverpool will be able to address other weaknesses in their squad.
The imminent exits of Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson have increased the need for reinforcements.
Liverpool have already identified RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande as their primary target to replace Salah, but they need another forward to provide adequate depth in attack.
They did not replace Luis Diaz last summer, and Federico Chiesa is expected to leave, leaving them short of attacking options.
Liverpool also plan to sign a new midfielder. Alexis Mac Allister and Curtis Jones could be on their way out of the club. Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton is one of their targets.
They are reportedly looking to sign a new left-back to compete with Milos Kerkez. Kostas Tsimikas could leave on a permanent deal, further increasing the need to bring in another left-back.
Liverpool are expected to be active in this summer’s transfer window, and keeping Konate could allow them to focus on strengthening other key areas.
