The latest development sets up a potential transfer battle between the Glasgow rivals, with Frosinone having now rejected approaches from both clubs.

Celtic came close to landing the winger during the January window after agreeing a fee, only for the player to opt against leaving midway through the campaign and remain in Italy.

Following Frosinone’s return to Serie A, however, the Italian club appear to have significantly increased their valuation of the attacker.

According to Sky Sports, the Ibrox club have failed with an £8 million bid for the Algerian international, after Celtic previously had an opening offer in the region of £6 million turned down.

The report adds that Frosinone are demanding between £13 million and £17 million before they would consider selling the 23-year-old.

Such a fee would represent a record-level outlay for either Celtic or Rangers, meaning negotiations would likely be required if a transfer is to materialise.

Both Martin O’Neill and Derek McInnes are eager to strengthen in wide areas, although Rangers have already secured an agreement to sign Daisuke Yokota from Hannover 96.

Celtic’s priority pursuit has centred on Haissem Hassan in recent weeks, but Ghedjemis has emerged as another leading option amid ongoing talks.

The winger was absent from Frosinone’s pre-season fixture against Benevento on Saturday, with reports suggesting Celtic may currently be best placed to complete a deal.

Ghedjemis has also attracted interest from several Serie A sides, while Borussia Dortmund and Monaco have also been credited with monitoring his situation.

Operating primarily from the right flank, he finished last season as Frosinone’s leading scorer with 15 goals, all from open play, while also establishing himself among Serie B’s most effective dribblers.
