The future of Julian Alvarez continues to generate debate across Spanish football, with Barcelona being linked to the Atletico Madrid forward despite the enormous difficulties surrounding any potential transfer.

As speculation continues, former Atletico striker Diego Forlan has now offered his perspective on the situation.

Speaking to Cope (h/t Mundo Deportivo), the Uruguayan legend discussed the rumours surrounding Alvarez and delivered a balanced view that considered both the player’s ambitions and Atlético’s interests.

While Forlan stopped short of encouraging a move, he made it clear that football realities often make these situations more complicated than supporters would like to believe.

Forlan’s advice to Alvarez

Alvarez has become one of Atletico Madrid’s most valuable assets and one of the most sought-after forwards in European football.

Naturally, that has led to constant rumours linking him with some of the continent’s biggest clubs, including Barcelona.

Asked about the possibility of the Argentine leaving the Metropolitano, Forlan stressed that every player ultimately has the right to decide what is best for their career.

“You have to respect everyone’s decision.”

The former Atlético forward also highlighted the financial realities that often influence major transfer decisions, stating, “If he has to go, if he wants to go, let it be for a good sum, which it surely will be.”

Furthermore, Forlan believes that, if handled correctly, such a deal could benefit all parties involved and described it as “a win-win situation for both sides.”

However, the Uruguayan was equally clear that Atletico Madrid’s interests must always come first.

“As I always say, the Uruguayan national team, Spain, Madrid, Barcelona – the clubs come before any player and any individual.”

He then elaborated on the idea that no footballer is bigger than the institution itself, adding,

“Another will come along. Great strikers have come before who have made history at Atlético de Madrid, and the club continues to grow.”

One reason Forlan’s remarks stand out is because he has experienced both sides of these situations during his own career.

The former striker understands the emotional connection supporters have with players, but he also knows the professional realities that drive football at the highest level.

Explaining that perspective, he said: “I’m a strong advocate for professional players, because I’ve experienced it first-hand.

“I understand that, for the fans, it might seem like a betrayal when a player wants to leave.”

He concluded by acknowledging the complexity of transfer situations, adding,

“It’s not that I’m trying to please both sides, but I fully understand the club’s position and I fully understand the player’s position.”
