If Tonda Eckert is banned for Southampton, they should turn to a 52-year-old with plenty of experience at international level as his replacement..
Southampton could be facing one of the most important summers in their recent history, and not just because of the uncertainty surrounding several key players, but also with Tonda Eckert as well.
After missing out on promotion back to the Premier League in controversial circumstances, the Saints now find themselves waiting to discover what the long-term fallout from the Spygate saga may be. While Tonda Eckert remains in charge for now, the possibility of a ban or extended absence means the club's hierarchy would be negligent not to have contingency plans in place.
Eckert could be banned until 2027, with more reasons for a ban due to Spygate becoming clearer for Southampton by the day. The German undoubtedly oversaw plenty of positives during 2025/26, though. Southampton were the strongest team in the Championship for the final half of the campaign, while a number of younger players continued their development under his stewardship.
However, with the club now preparing for another year in an incredibly competitive second tier, uncertainty in the dugout is the last thing they need on top of a number of high-profile exits potentially in terms of players. Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Leo Scienza, Caspar Jander, and Shea Charles will not all be at St. Mary's by the end of August.

Beyond the players, should Southampton be forced into a managerial change, they will require somebody capable of maintaining continuity while also maximising the talent already at St. Mary's in terms of the academy players they have.
With potentially the likes of Jander, Cam Bragg, and Jay Robinson, as well as several academy prospects expected to play important roles moving forward, player development must remain a key consideration alongside promotion ambitions.
This is where Lee Carsley could emerge as an intriguing option. The 52-year-old Irishman has built an outstanding reputation for developing young players throughout his coaching career. His work within England's youth setup helped nurture numerous talents who have gone on to establish themselves at Premier League and international level.
His calm, progressive style of coaching has earned widespread praise across the game, even if he has rarely been given the top jobs. Carsley is also believed to be keen on a return to club management after spending much of the last decade working within the international environment.
Southampton could therefore offer him the ideal opportunity. The Saints possess one of the strongest academies outside the Premier League's established elite, with the club regularly producing players capable of making the step-up to senior football. Those include Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, and James Ward-Prowse.
Importantly, Carsley would not be walking into a rebuilding job. Despite missing promotion, Southampton still have a squad capable of challenging near the top of the Championship. If at least some key figures such as can be retained and recruitment is handled effectively, the foundations for another promotion push are already in place.

While Southampton will hope Eckert remains available to continue his work, the uncertainty surrounding the Spygate investigation means alternatives must be considered behind the scenes. Clubs with Premier League ambitions cannot afford to be caught unprepared, particularly when another promotion challenge is expected in 2026/27.
Should the Saints ultimately require a new manager, Carsley would bring a profile that aligns closely with the club's long-term philosophy. His modern coaching methods and emphasis on technical development could also help maximise the potential of Southampton's current crop of young players, while maintaining a style capable of competing at the top end of the Championship.
Eckert has done an excellent job in many ways, but with Carsley understood to want a return to managing clubs again, St. Mary's could represent an ideal opportunity for both parties should a vacancy emerge. With Wolverhampton Wanderers, West Ham United, and Burnley coming down, it will be a competitive division as well.
You need someone in the dugout to give you an edge on the pitch, especially as Middlesbrough and Millwall in particular, and arguably also Derby County, have that with their current managers. It could make all the difference across 46 matches and it's what Southampton need.
