Igor Thiago made Premier League history, becoming the first Brazilian to score more than 20 goals in a single season. His brace in Brentford's 2-2 draw at Everton moved him within one of Erling Haaland.

He struck his 20th then 21st league goals during the game. L'Équipe highlights that the feat underlines the scarcity of Brazilian centre-forwards to thrive in the English top flight compared with other South American nations.

Thiago is 24 and made his senior Brazil debut on 27 March in a 2-1 defeat to France. He previously played in Bulgaria with Ludogorets, then in Belgium with Club Bruges.

By contrast, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay have been represented by elite scorers in the division, including Sergio Agüero, Carlos Tévez, Alexis Sanchez and Luis Suarez.

Until now, the best single-season haul by a Brazilian was 15, achieved by Matheus Cunha for Wolverhampton in 2024-2025, Gabriel Martinelli for Arsenal in 2022-2023 and Roberto Firmino for Liverpool in 2017-2018. This season Joao Pedro, at Chelsea, has 14 with seven matches remaining.
