On 16 October, Iker Casillas reported that five luxury watches had been taken from his Madrid home and replaced with cheaper ones. The suspect worked as a security guard at the complex where Sara Carbonero and her children live, while his wife cleaned for the family and at Casillas’s house.
Images published by Prensa Ibérica show the suspected thief in a gold shop in Aluche on 17 October, his face hidden by a Real Madrid cap as staff cleaned and checked dismantled pieces from a gold watch. He was paid 8,000 euros for the gold.
The National Police’s UDEV Central, in Operation Santo, later established that the guard, a Spaniard named Juan Carlos, had visited several gold-buying stores to sell two of Casillas’s watches. One sale brought him 18,000 euros.
Police recovered two stolen watches. Three others remain missing and were allegedly switched by the suspect.
The man denies taking more than two watches and has admitted swapping those two. He has also exculpated his wife, a Paraguayan who had worked for almost seven years for Carbonero and Casillas. When police detained the couple, they had plane tickets for a couple of weeks’ holiday in South America.
