Illan Meslier has reportedly turned down the chance to be Birmingham City’s first-choice goalkeeper this summer in favour of joining Arsenal. The Athletic reports the 26-year-old is due to link up with Mikel Arteta’s squad, while the Daily Mail claims Birmingham made the offer but could not match Arsenal’s terms.
Meslier left Leeds after seven years when his contract expired, having slipped to third behind Karl Darlow and Lucas Perri and not making a first-team appearance last season, though he did feature for the Under-21s. yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk understands a new deal has been agreed with Alex Cairns, with uncertainty remaining over Darlow’s future.
At Arsenal he is expected to be second choice at best, with David Raya established as first-choice. If Kepa Arrizabalaga remains at the Emirates, Meslier could be third in line, mirroring last season at Elland Road.
Should Kepa depart, reportedly available for around £5m, Meslier’s chances of cup minutes would improve. Last season Raya did not feature in the Carabao Cup or FA Cup and was rested for a Champions League tie against Kairat Almaty.
Meslier was one of three senior goalkeepers to see Leeds contracts expire and appears likely to be the first to settle his future. Darlow has been offered new terms but is believed to have interest from Manchester United and Everton, and Daniel Farke may need a replacement if he moves.
