Chelsea take on Hull City today in what could be a pretty standard FA Cup game against lower league opposition.

But for our new manager Liam Rosenior, it’s something a bit more special. The gaffer was both a player and a coach of the Tigers, and in his press conference earlier this week he spoke a little about what it meant for him to be going back there.

First up, Rosenior claimed that he had changed a lot since taking the Hull manager job in 2022:

“I’ve had great experiences since, going to Strasbourg, going to France. I think if you stand still as a player or as a coach, then there’s something wrong from the experience you take.

“So I’m definitely a better coach than I was two years ago and hopefully I’ll be a better coach in the next two years to come I’ve had loads of different experiences, learning different ways, but if it wasn’t for Hull, and [Hull owner] Acun [Ilicali] in particular, giving me that opportunity, which I’m really thankful for, I wouldn’t be in the situation I’m in now.

Rosenior has an even more personal connection with the city – his grandmother lived there and he used to go there in summer holidays:

“I used to go to Hull when I was a little boy in the summer holidays when she lived there. I grew up there for my summer holidays, went to Boothferry Park in the summer to watch them play. It’s strange that I’m from London but I have a connection with Hull.”

It seems like he’s going to get a great reception from the local crowd.

In other news…

The number one job for Liam Rosenior tonight is to rotate. There are players who are racking up crazy numbers of minutes, and they need a break. We won’t get a better chance all season than tonight.

Joao Pedro’s boom in form means he’s now the top rated player at the club for the season on some stats site – what a turnaround that has been.
