“I’m responsible” – Valencia manager Carlos Corberan on dismal 18-1 record against Barcelona | OneFootball

On Sunday, Valencia suffered a thumping defeat at the hands of Barcelona for the third match in a row, as they were soundly beaten 6-0 by the Catalan side at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.

It was a demoralising evening for Los Che, who fell apart in the second half as Barcelona scored five times. As per Marca, head coach Carlos Corberan gave his assessment of the 90 minutes.

“The idea was to defend better than we did. Barcelona outplayed us in duels. They got the first goal when we were tighter. The second one hurt us and the third one left us dead. From there it is very difficult to make analyses when we are demoralised and remember past episodes. We are not capable, me first, of offering a more competitive Valencia against this opponent. We have not been up to the task. We have been overwhelmed.”

The result means that Corberan’s aggregate score against Barcelona since taking over at Valencia is now 18-1 (7-1 and 5-0 last season), and he admitted that he continues to get his tactics wrong against Hansi Flick.

“The approach, which is mine, has not worked. I am responsible for the third time in a row for not having found the key to play against Barcelona. We have to defend better.”

Corberan sends message to Valencia supporters

There was a lot of anger from Valencia supporters in the aftermath of Sunday’s match, to which Corberan gave a response.

“The pain they have is shared by us. I understand the pain because we have not represented Valencia at the level they deserve. We have to change this result and improve it as it happened last year on two occasions. There is a version of the club and the team that is not the one we have seen.”
