Real Madrid’s presidential polling is underway, and after two hectic weeks of campaigning, the decision will finally be made today as to who will be the club’s next president.
Florentino Perez has been the favourite all along and is expected to win by a massive majority, but Enrique Riquelme did create ripples with his campaign that dented Perez’s image and project.
After all, the challenger created doubts in the minds of the Real Madrid members and faithful about several topics, particularly the club’s ownership structure and Perez’s idea of selling a stake to an external investor.
Making one final plea to the Real Madrid socios at the time of the polling via MARCA, the challenger Riquelme once again pledged that all his promises will be fulfilled if he is voted to power.
“I pledge before all socios that the promises I made will be fulfilled, whether on the social or sporting level, and where we also need transparency in the institutional and financial aspects,” he said, strengthening his case.

He then emphasised how his board will be very meticulous with the management of Real Madrid’s economic situation, especially regarding the sale to an external investor.
“We are truly concerned about the economic situation of Real Madrid, it indeed needs change.”
“Real Madrid needs to build on the legacy it possesses from great presidents, major titles, and massive projects,” he added.
Finally, he pledged to bring more transparency into how the club is run and requested the votes of the club members.
“There are many things that need to be changed: transparency, democracy, and governance within the club.”
“If we can today make the socios evaluate and vote on what has been accomplished in just two weeks, imagine what we can do in the coming months,” he concluded.

Unsurprisingly, Florentino Perez seems to be leading the election at this point in time, and the initial trends suggest that he will continue as the president.
Yet, the numbers do not close half as dominant as what his entourage would have hoped for, and he currently appears to be leading only by a 65-35 majority, something that is underwhelming and concerning for his entourage.
