On 27 June 1994, Diego Armando Maradona tested positive for ephedrine and was excluded from Argentina's World Cup squad in the United States, a decision that ended his international career.
He marked his return by scoring in the 4-0 win over Greece. According to L'Équipe, their reporter that summer recalls the shock around the idol's fall and how the Olympique Lyonnais doctor was unexpectedly drawn into the case.
He then helped Argentina defeat Nigeria 2-1.
After those two matches, a doping control returned a positive result, and the comeback ended abruptly.
It halted a storyline the sport so often relishes, the comeback of a legend.
