Newcomers fail to impress, young stars helping to carry Herons' hopes

World Cup 2026 will dominate soccer news for the next six weeks -- as it should -- but the break in MLS' schedule gives us a chance to catch our breath and assess Los Garzas' situation before Leagues Cup and the MLS Cup playoff race heats up in July.

Despite some early disappointment (being bounced from CONCACAF Champions Cup by Nashville, failing to win any of its first four matches at Nu Stadium, a supporters' protest), the Herons are actually in pretty good shape. Miami has played 15 of 34 league matches and sits in second place in the Eastern Conference with 9 wins, 2 losses and 4 draws (31 points). Nashville has 33 points in 14 matches and leads the Supporters' Shield standings for the league's best record; the Herons are fourth, behind Vancouver and San Jose with 32 points each.

They've achieved that mark even though MLS Cup-winning coach Javier Mascherano and his staff resigned unexpectedly in April, causing sporting director Guillermo Hoyos to assume interim head coaching duties. The club also has fought through injuries, inconsistency, and poor performances from newcomers and key veterans, trying to replace retired legends Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets, outrageous and not-so-outrageous transfer rumors...typical Inter Miami chaos.
