CD Castellón are finalising the signing of Iñigo Córdoba as his Burgos CF contract ends, a move that signals the club’s growth. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the winger is viewed among the division’s best and was highly sought-after this summer.
The 29-year-old from Bilbao has 87 La Liga appearances, 80 for Athletic and seven for Alavés, more than the rest of Castellón’s squad combined. Until now, Awer Mabil led the group with five top-flight games for Cádiz.
It reflects a shift in recruitment. Last summer only defender Jeremy Mellot arrived from Segunda, relegated with Tenerife, while Bob Voulgaris targeted Primera RFEF. Early moves this time underline a sustainable step forward.
Álvaro Martín and Juanjo Nieto bring strong Segunda pedigrees, and with Iñigo Córdoba, capable across the front line, there is little debate. Over the past two seasons he was central to Burgos’s play-off push, making 77 appearances with seven goals and seven assists. Burgos offered a new deal, then announced recently he would not stay.
His output should rise in Castellón’s more attacking set-up, the fit appears mutually beneficial. He also outperforms predecessor Brian Cipenga defensively.
Burgos was his first taste of Segunda. An Athletic academy product and youth international, he played nearly 100 first-team games across league, cup and Europa League from 2017 to 2020, then joined Deportivo Alavés mid-2020/21. He revived his career in the Eredivisie, scoring nine in a season with Go Ahead Eagles, then spent two campaigns at Fortuna Sittard. In 2024 he returned to Spain to join Burgos, initially linking up with brother Aitor before his January move to China. If all goes smoothly, the left-footer Iñigo will wear black and white at SkyFi Castalia.
