Villarreal beat PSV Eindhoven 1-3 in their second pre-season friendly, producing a slick display and creating far more chances. It marked the first victory of the Iñigo Pérez era.

According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, Pérez’s aggressive press caught the eye, with Carlos Maciá holding as pivot while Nizar, Moleiro and Alassane Diatta formed the next line. Mikautadze and Ayoze led from the front to trigger it.

Luiz Junior was secure in several moments but a major mistake handed PSV their goal, misplacing a simple pass. He was sound in the air and made a save. Sergi Cardona was booked before the break and toiled at times, yet joined attacks as Moleiro moved inside.

Pau Navarro directed the build-up and continues to grow, though a high line brought the odd late recovery. Kambwala, short of rhythm after a long lay-off, showed power and fits Pérez’s preferred profile. Mourinho also had testing moments, was booked and stayed at home, but remained dependable.

Diatta delivered a standout display, leading the press with the ball use to match, and again linked well with Maciá. Maciá, 17, won it, used it and made others play, and is improving by the game.

Given the freedom to roam, Moleiro carried the ball, created and combined with Mikautadze and Ayoze. Nizar matched the level with pace and dribbling. Ayoze threatened and could have scored, while Mikautadze missed clear openings but stayed involved and was rewarded with a fine finish that tormented PSV’s defence.
