Inter Miami striker Germán Berterame says his recent head injury has given him perspective as he works towards a return. According to interheron.com, the 27-year-old Argentinian-born Mexican had begun to find form alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez before the incident in Montréal.
In the 69th minute of a goalless match at Stade Saputo, he rose for a corner and collided with Montréal defenders Daniel Pereira and Efrain Morales, Morales' elbow caught him in the head. He was knocked unconscious, treated on the pitch for about 10 minutes, then taken to hospital by ambulance.
When play resumed, Suárez converted the penalty and Miami won 1-0. Berterame later said, “I felt the hit and automatically felt like, as I described it, like my TV went off.”
He suffered undisclosed head and neck injuries and entered the league's concussion protocol. He said his family were shaken at first but are now at peace, and that the scare has reminded him to savour time with loved ones and colleagues.
Berterame has seven goals and four assists in 17 appearances, five of those after interim coach Guillermo Hoyos restored Suárez to the starting line-up. He hopes to sustain that output, saying he is enthusiastic and focused on his return after Montréal.
Miami host Toronto at 6:30 p.m. at Nu Stadium, seeking to halt a four-match winless run. The Herons are 11-3-6 on 39 points, second in the Eastern Conference and Supporters' Shield, seven behind Nashville SC, and went 1-3-2 without him. Toronto are 11th in the East on 21 points.
It is unclear whether Berterame will start after his layoff. Teams release line-ups and bench rosters about an hour before kick-off.
