Nottingham Forest have turned to Oliver Glasner after a trophy-laden spell at Crystal Palace. The Austrian delivered the FA Cup in 2025, then the Community Shield and the UEFA Conference League.

According to Nottingham Post, he left Selhurst Park as a free agent and his switch has irked some Palace fans. Owner Evangelos Marinakis is ambitious and sees the change as a push forward.

Glasner is described as forthright, quick to say if backing is lacking or if standards dip. He is credited with instilling belief and persuading a squad they could win trophies.

His approach is counterattacking with three ball-playing centre-backs and demanding wing-backs, 5-2-2-1 without the ball, 3-4-3 in possession. Wing-backs must attack and recover, a load Palace managed with Daniel Munoz and Tyrick Mitchell staying fit.

Midfield is a pivot, often pairing a runner with a possession-minded partner. Technical quality is prized, which helped Daichi Kamada and Adam Wharton thrive.

He develops players, with Will Hughes cited as becoming a well-rounded, at times key, midfielder. Patience may be needed because the system can feel rigid, with winless spells of 10-15 games during adaptation.

Low blocks troubled Palace, and similar squad profiles mean that issue could persist if lessons are not absorbed. Yet Glasner’s certainty was influential, even telling Pep Guardiola they would solve the FA Cup final if the same plan was repeated.

How that uncompromising vision meshes with Marinakis could go very well or end abruptly. Either way, Forest know what they are buying.
