Malo Gusto has had a funny career at Chelsea so far.

His initial impact was great, and for a while he was being talked about as the big success of the new ownership in the transfer market so far.

However as time has gone by his form has dropped off – fans are super frustrated with him this season, and the game against Brentford on Sunday saw big chunks of the public losing faith in him. Despite that, he’s clearly seen as an important player, and the fact that Reece James is being restricted to 90 minutes a week means he will continue to be.

Despite the growing misgivings and frustrations of some fans, the Frenchman looks certain to get a new contract, according to Graeme Bailey, who spoke to the Chelsea Chronicle.

“He’s proven he is a huge part of the squad. I firmly believe that will get done [contract extension]. It’s too far to say he’s essential, but they’d struggle if he wasn’t there,” the insider wrote.

“The right-back situation is interesting. Do we see another one come in? I still think we do see a full-back come in. Let’s keep an eye on that, but I do expect Gusto’s new deal soon.”

Chelsea plan calls into question long contract strategy

Gusto’s current deal lasts until 2030 so there isn’t really any need to extend him. The only reason to do so is to reward him for his good form (which doesn’t make sense as his form hasn’t been that good).

The former Lyon man is one of the lowest paid players in the squad, but if you’re going to give players a raise after a couple of years anyway, what is the point in locking them in on such long deals? It just exposes us to the negatives without allowing us to reap the positives.
