With Grêmio crowned Campeonato Gaúcho champions at Beira-Rio, Internacional received their runners-up medals in the dressing room. According to Globo.com, the arrangement was agreed with the Federação Gaúcha de Futebol for security reasons, and head coach Luís Castro later criticised the post-match organisation.

A 3-0 first-leg win at the Arena had set Grêmio on course for their 44th state title. In Porto Alegre, centre-back Gustavo Martins struck late in the first half, before Alan Patrick levelled from the penalty spot after the interval.

There had been guidance since Saturday that, if Grêmio confirmed the title, Inter would leave the pitch for a private presentation. The plan was intended to prevent any disorder on the Beira-Rio turf.

Castro said he had never previously been in a final where the losing side did not receive their medals on the pitch, calling the absence of medals for Internacional an organisational failure.

He also recalled a defeat in the first phase at the same venue, saying he congratulated the rivals, accepted they were better and left to reflect on why he lost the Gre-Nal.
