San Siro is emerging as the frontrunner to host the Finalissima between world champions Argentina and European champions Spain on March 27th and Inter Milan captain Lautaro Martinez is racing to be fit in time to take centre stage at his own ground.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, the idea of staging the showpiece in Milan is serious and concrete, even if not yet finalised.
Inter and Milan, who became co-owners of San Siro several months ago, have both been involved in discussions at the highest level.
Lisbon has also been contacted as an alternative.
Meanwhile Madrid has been largely ruled out given Spain’s status as reigning European champions.
Milan holds a clear advantage.
The city left an outstanding impression with its recent organisation of the Winter Olympics.
And, furthermore, San Siro, despite not being the most modern of venues, retains a prestige and emotional pull that makes it a compelling candidate.
The news has delighted Lautaro.
The Argentina captain has been pushing hard to recover from the calf injury sustained in Norway.
And, indeed, Gazzetta report he has been back running on the Appiano Gentile pitches for two days.
His target is to return for Inter’s trip to Fiorentina on March 22nd.
Before answering coach Lionel Scaloni’s call-up for the Finalissima.
Scaloni himself exchanged messages with Walter Samuel, who visited Inter’s headquarters alongside Diego Milito.
Indeed, underlining the close connection between the national team setup and the Nerazzurri’s inner circle.
Should San Siro be confirmed as the venue, Lautaro will be desperate to play on home soil.
Especially in what would be one of the most glamorous international fixtures of the year.
