Giuseppe Bergomi has backed Pio Esposito to start for Italy in the World Cup play-off final against Bosnia, with the Inter Milan and Italy legend impressed by the youngster’s impact as a substitute against Northern Ireland.
Speaking on Sky Sport after the 2-0 victory, via FCInter1908, Bergomi was clear in his assessment.
“He came on well,” he said of the Inter forward, who played the final half hour of the match.
Italy now face Bosnia in the play-off final, the Balkan side edging through on penalties against Wales, with former Inter striker Edin Dzeko scoring a late equaliser to force extra time.
On the team selection for the final, Bergomi offered a detailed verdict.
“The formation? I would think carefully about the wide areas, Dimarco and Politano are the ones who run most and that is where you can consider making changes,” he said.
In midfield, however, he would make no alterations.
“I would not change anything there, Barella, Locatelli and Tonali. You need energy on the pitch.”
His boldest call came up front. “In attack I would start Esposito,” he said directly.
He also addressed the defensive setup. “If Bastoni is fit, I would play him alongside Calafiori at centre-back.”
