Inter Milan have made a move to test the waters on Atalanta midfielder Ederson despite Atletico Madrid already holding a personal agreement with the Brazil international, raising the intriguing possibility of a repeat of the Lautaro Martinez situation from several years ago.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio on his Caffè di Marzio podcast, via FCInter1908, Inter recently attempted to establish whether they could insert themselves into negotiations between Ederson and Atalanta.
The Brazilian is certain to leave the Bergamo club this summer and Atletico have already secured his agreement.
However, the deal between the Spanish club and Atalanta itself is not yet finalised, leaving a window of opportunity.
“Inter tried to understand if it was possible to enter into an agreement between Ederson and Atalanta,” Di Marzio said.
“The valuation is very high and the agreement between Atletico and the player makes Inter’s involvement complicated, but it must be noted.”
The historical comparison Di Marzio reaches for is telling.
“It reminds me of when Atletico completed Lautaro‘s medical and then Inter managed to sign him anyway. I don’t know if they will manage it in this situation, but Ederson will leave Atalanta.”
For Inter, Ederson represents the temptation for their second midfield signing this summer alongside Aleksandar Stankovic.
The budget for the rebuild is significant but must be spread across multiple positions.
Therefore making landing a player of Ederson’s calibre all the more challenging.
Atletico are pushing hard to conclude their end of the deal. Inter are watching closely, just in case history repeats itself.
