Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni has received some criticism for a careless performance for Italy against Estonia.

The Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews, particularly highlight the costly yellow card that the 26-year-old received.

Italy secured a hugely important victory over Estonia yesterday.

At risk of missing out on a third consecutive World Cup, the EURO 2020 winners needed to take three points.

Italy got off to just the right start. Fiorentina striker Moise Kean put the Azzurri ahead in the fourth minute. This courtesy of an assist from Inter wingback Federico Dimarco.

Then, Mateo Retegui doubled Italy’s advantage a few minutes before halftime.

Italy conceded a second half goal that introduced some major doubts. However, Inter striker Francesco Pio Esposito came off the bench and scored his first ever goal for the national team to wrap up the victory.

Pio Esposito and Dimarco were not the only two Inter players to appear for Italy, though.

Nerazzurri midfielder Nicolo Barella also held down his role as a stalwart of Italy’s midfield. And Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni started, having long established himself as a leader at the back.

However, argue the Corriere della Sera, Bastoni did not exactly show why he’s so important for both club and country.

On the contrary, the newspaper suggest. Bastoni looked shaky, and had some lapses in attention.

Most notably, Bastoni picked up a yellow card.

This booking means that the Inter defender will miss Italy’s crucial World Cup qualifying match against Israel due to a suspension.
