Cristian Chivu cut a composed and confident figure ahead of Inter Milan’s Serie A clash with Atalanta, welcoming Marcus Thuram back to full fitness and dismissing any suggestion that Sunday’s derby defeat has dented the Nerazzurri’s belief or altered their approach.
Speaking to DAZN shortly before kick-off, via FCInterNews, the Inter head coach was asked about Thuram’s recovery from the illness that restricted him to the bench against Milan.
His response was straightforward.
“Yes, it is important. He has trained well and recovered from his problem, the fever before the derby. We have him at 100% and we are pleased because he is important for us.”
Inter ended up losing the game to the Rossoneri, allowing their cross city rivals to close the gap at the top to just seven points.
Emerging victorious against Atalanta this afternoon is a priority, allowing Chivu’s side to open up some distance at the top again.
When the question of concern was put to him directly, Chivu laughed before delivering a characteristically measured answer.
“My concern does not come from one lost match. My concern has always been the construction of the group and our journey. What matters is the direction and our objectives.”
He was emphatic that nothing has changed internally.
“We have always declared the desire to be competitive until the end. After one defeat, nothing has changed. We have the same attitude and the same determination that has brought us here. We must continue like this, with even more confidence and determination.”
On the overall message to his players, Chivu was equally clear.
“We must return to doing what we have always done this season, give rhythm and intensity. There are exceptions along the way. You learn from mistakes and move forward with confidence.”
