Lautaro Martinez has delivered a rallying call to his Inter Milan teammates ahead of Sunday’s Easter showdown with Roma, urging the squad to relax, smile and rediscover the joy that carried them to their best results of the season.

The Argentina captain spoke to DAZN, via FCInterNews, ahead of his return to the starting lineup.

Indeed, after more than a month on the sidelines, and his message was as much psychological as tactical.

Inter head into the Roma match carrying the weight of a difficult run.

And also a squad featuring those still processing the pain of World Cup elimination.

Lautaro‘s response is simple, leave it all behind.

“We are always here to be close to the players, whether things have gone well or less well,” he said.

“The important thing is that they have their heads completely on Inter. The most important thing is to leave everything behind, because football is like this. We must turn the page, we have two important objectives ahead of us and there is no time to think about the past.”

On his own absence and its impact on the team’s results, Lautaro was characteristically measured and team-first.

“I don’t think it is because I was missing, perhaps because there have been so many games in a short space and a dip can happen. I don’t think in all these years we have had a season where we have gone strong all year. It happens, but now we need to change, show a different attitude as we have done before. We are first, so it means we have done things well up to now.”

On Thuram’s form, and the observation that the Frenchman had scored for France while struggling at club level, Lautaro offered up this response:

“But I wasn’t there in America either,” he laughed, before turning serious.

“When the team’s level drops, the individual struggles too, and stands out more when the team does well. We need to pull something from within, something that has been missing in this period. We must keep doing what the coach asks and try to win matches, in the end what counts is winning and staying at the top.”

When asked whether there is a dressing room pact to win the Scudetto as proper recognition for everything this squad has endured, Lautaro’s answer was his most powerful of all.

“Last season we lived through very difficult moments. Today we have begun a new journey that brings us close to two objectives. I trust my teammates, the staff and the people who work around us, because together we will go and take those objectives.”

He then delivered the line that will define the final weeks of Inter’s season.

“We need to relax our heads, smile and enjoy ourselves. That is what led us to winning titles that had been missing for a long time. We need to learn to have fun again among ourselves, attitude is the most important thing for approaching matches in the right way.”
