Bologna stunned Inter in the second Supercoppa Italiana semi-final, overcoming the eight-time champions after a dramatic penalty shootout. The match ended in a 1-1 draw in regulation, with both goals coming in the opening 45 minutes.
Inter enjoyed a dream start to the game, as Marcus Thuram put them in front after only two minutes. However, Riccardo Orsolini drew Bologna level late in the first half, converting a penalty kick recklessly conceded by Yann Bisseck, who handled the ball inside his own box.
Chances were back and forth in the second half, yet neither team could unlock the deadlock. Former Inter midfielder Giovanni Fabbian nearly won it for Bologna right at the death, but Josep Martinez pulled off a superb diving save to only postpone the inevitable.
Cristian Chivu’s side failed to beat Bologna for the sixth time in their last seven meetings across all competitions. However, this defeat weighs particularly heavily, considering it denied the San Siro giants an opportunity to equal Juventus’ record tally of nine Supercoppa titles.
Without further ado, let’s look at our Inter ratings.
Josep Martinez – 8/10
Unfortunately for Inter, the Spaniard’s heroics went in vain. In addition to sending the game to penalties with a fabulous late save, Martinez made one stop in the shutout.
Yann Bisseck – 7/10
The German defender enjoyed a flawless first half, but he often failed to cope with Nicolo Cambiaghi’s pace and strength beyond the hour mark. He was comfortable in possession.
Stefan de Vrij – 8/10
Handed a rare chance to start, the Dutch veteran didn’t cease to amaze. He delivered a composed performance at the heart of Inter’s defense, fending off Santiago Castro and Ciro Immobile.
Alessandro Bastoni – 8/10
His anticipation and vision helped Inter open the scoring, as he intercepted a loose pass near the halfway line before setting up Thuram on a platter with an inch-perfect cross.
Federico Dimarco – 6/10
Inter desperately lacked his service from the left flank tonight. However, the Italian wingback wasn’t at his usual best, even though he nearly scored a stunning goal late in the second half.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 6/10
The veteran midfielder played a prominent role in the build-up play, but he was unable to provide a spark in the final third, frequently passing the ball to his closest teammate.
Piotr Zielinski – 7/10
The resurgent Polish ace excelled in a new role, dictating the pace with impeccable passing and vision. Yet, there was a sense that he held onto the ball longer than he should have.
Nicolo Barella – 6/10
Despite working his socks off to help Inter win the midfield battle, the diminutive star lacked his usual cutting edge in the final third and was unable to produce a decisive moment.
Luis Henrique – 5/10
Barring a dangerous-looking shot early in the second half, the Brazilian winger barely influenced the game, delivering another underwhelming showing.
Ange-Yoan Bonny – 6/10
The French striker spent most of the match playing with his back against the goal, focusing more on holding up the ball than threatening the opposition defense.
Marcus Thuram – 7/10
The Nerazzurri talisman vanished from the contest after drawing first blood, cutting a frustrated figure as Inter failed to create much in front of goal after going 1-0 up.
Lautaro Martinez – 6/10
Davide Frattesi – 5/10
