Inter Milan’s journey at the 2025 FIFA World Cup ended abruptly at the hands of Brazilian giants Fluminense. Flu got the better of the Nerazzurri in the first knockout round, claiming a stunning 2-0 win at Bank of America Stadium.
The game couldn’t have started better for the Brazilians as German Cano fired them 1-0 up after less than 120 seconds. Inter tried to reply quickly, yet Federico Dimarco failed to beat Fluminense goalkeeper Fabio from a promising position, forcing the veteran’s diving save.
Despite dominating possession, Inter struggled to create many chances in the first half. Furthermore, they were lucky not to trail Renato Gaucho’s side by a greater margin at halftime. Indeed, Fluminense had a late first-half goal disallowed for a marginal offside.
Inter continued to dominate the game without scoring opportunities after the break. Meanwhile, Jhon Arias tested Yann Sommer twice before Lautaro Martinez missed Inter’s best chance tonight. El Toro hit the post from the edge of the box toward injury time.
Hercules put the final nail in Inter’s coffin in second-half stoppages, booking Fluminense’s quarter-final berth against the odds. On the other hand, new Inter boss Cristian Chivu must find a way to recover his side mentally after yet another psychological blow.
Without further ado, let’s look at our player ratings.
Yann Sommer – 5/10
Despite making two impressive saves to thwart Arias, the Swiss veteran should’ve reacted better for Fluminense’s opener. Moreover, Hercules’ goal caught him completely off guard.
Alessandro Bastoni – 4/10
The Italian superstar’s form crisis shows no sign of waning. His sluggish reaction helped the Brazilian outfit grab an early lead, while he struggled big-time against Arias.
Stefan de Vrij – 7/10
Tonight, Inter’s most reliable center-back held up his end of the bargain for most of the game, though he shoulders part of the blame for Cano’s opening goal.
Matteo Darmian – 5/10
Deployed in a more conservative role than usual, the experienced defender often failed to cope with Fluminense forwards’ devastating pace.
Denzel Dumfries – 3/10
One of the Dutchman’s worst showings since the start of last season saw him make several defensive blunders and contribute nothing to Inter’s attack going forward.
Nicolo Barella – 6/10
Inter needed the diminutive midfielder to provide a spark in the engine room during Hakan Calhanoglu’s absence. However, this wasn’t Barella’s night.
Kristjan Asllani – 4/10
As if Inter needed another confirmation of Asllani’s inability to fill the Turkish star’s shoes, the Albanian delivered a flat, uninspired display. Struggled with the tempo and failed to offer creativity or control.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan – 5/10
Well past his prime, the Armenian seems to have lost his guile, often refusing to take risks in possession, even though Inter needed someone to inspire their inert attack.
Federico Dimarco – 7/10
Unlucky not to score, Dimarco forced Fabio’s decent save in the first half and missed the target by a whisker from a free kick after the break. However, his defensive game lacked conviction.
Lautaro Martinez – 6/10
It was a quiet night for the Inter captain until that fateful moment late in the match when the woodwork denied the Nerazzurri a way back into this contest.
Marcus Thuram – 4/10
Back from yet another defensive setback, the Frenchman was a marginal figure. Often cut off from the rest of the pack, Thuram was nowhere near his usual best.
Luis Henrique – 6/10
Petar Sucic – 6/10
Valentin Carboni – 5/10
Sebastiano Esposito – 4/10
