Internacional issued an official statement on Monday after Corinthians publicly criticised the officiating of their Copa do Brasil last-16 first leg. The club appealed to the CBF for transparency, balance and safety in the return match, saying progression should be decided only by on-field performance, and it did not name Corinthians.
The first leg ended 2-0 to Internacional at Beira-Rio on Sunday. According to ge.globo, Corinthians have sent a letter to the CBF’s Refereeing Commission with complaints about referee Alex Gomes Stefano and requested access to the officials’ communications, and players alleged they were intimidated by the referee in Porto Alegre.
Post-match, midfielder Rodrigo Garro criticised Alex Gomes Stefano, alleging disrespect towards players. Executive Marcelo Paz voiced concern over the standard of officiating and said the club’s legal department would assess possible measures.
On social media, Corinthians shared videos of incidents they believe went against them. One shows left-back Matheus Bidu being pulled down by Internacional’s Bruno Gomes, prompting penalty appeals, while another revisits a foul by Garro inside the area.
Corinthians must win by at least three goals at Neo Química Arena to reach the quarter-finals in normal time. A two-goal victory would take the tie to penalties. The return is scheduled for Thursday 6 at 20:00 in Itaquera.
