Eintracht’s U19s beat Athletic Club 4-3 in a penalty shootout in the UEFA Youth League round of 32, after the match itself ended 2-2.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s U19s produced a battling performance against their Athletic Bilbao counterparts, but found themselves 1-0 down after just five minutes when Igor Oyono opened the scoring after being teed up by Adrian Perez. Yupanqui equalisesThe Spanish side pushed for a second goal after that, but it was the Eagles who struck next, with Philipp Eisele Yupanqui scoring a diving header following a corner to net the vital leveller. Bilbao retake the leadEintracht’s celebrations were short-lived, however, as Athletic Club scored again just before half-time. After Oyono was thwarted by Amil Siljevic, the Eintracht goalkeeper was powerless to keep out Xantiago Oyharcabal on the rebound.Siljevic impressesSiljevic kept the Eagles in the game early in the second half when he denied Oyono one-on-one (46’). The custodian frustrated the opposition again ten minutes later with an outstanding block with his foot to keep out Egoitz Hernández’s shot (56)’.
Shootout heroicsEintracht equalised in the 81st minute when Alessandro Gaul Souza set up Benjamin Dzanovic to score, making it 2-2 and ultimately sending the game to penalties. Siljevic emerged as the hero in the shootout, saving two spot-kicks to send Eintracht into the last 16 of the Youth League.
