Ipswich ‘closing in’ on £20m Abdul Fatawu deal as Russell Martin rebuild continues | OneFootball

Ipswich Town are closing in on a £20m move for Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu, 22, according to Sky Sports.

The Ghana international attracted Premier League and European interest after Leicester’s drop to League One, with Everton, Besiktas and West Ham linked. He registered nine goals and eight assists in 44 games last season.

Ipswich appointed Gary O’Neil last month and are preparing for a second Premier League season in three years. Fatawu is viewed as an addition to their forward line.

If the move goes through, he would reunite with former Leicester teammate Kasey McAteer, the pair contested the right flank in 2023/24 before Fatawu’s ACL injury. O’Neil also has Wes Burns, Sindre Walle Egeli and Chiedozie Ogbene for that role. His last top-flight appearance came in November 2024, when he impressed for Steve Cooper’s Foxes in defeat at Manchester United.

Leicester are reshaping for Russell Martin ahead of their second League One campaign. Jeremy Monga has joined Manchester City for £10m plus add-ons, Bilal El Khannouss has moved to Stuttgart for £12.7m, and Harry Winks has signed for Cagliari, with Victor Kristiansen loaned to Panathinaikos. Others have left on frees, while Jordan James, Joe Aribo and Divin Mukasa have returned to Rennes, Southampton and Manchester City.

So far, City have added Conor Chaplin on a free after leaving Ipswich and goalkeeper Alex McCarthy following his Southampton contract expiry. After a 3-0 pre-season win at Burton Albion, Martin said he expects further arrivals this week, citing squad size and outside interest.
