West Ham's Max Kilman is attracting interest from Ipswich Town, in a move that would see him reunited with former Wolves boss Gary O'Neil.

West Ham are preparing for life in the Championship, and they are expected to be very busy in the transfer window ahead of their opener against Burnley.

The Hammers’ relegation, which was confirmed on the final day of the Premier League season, has resulted in a substantial drop in revenue, and some high-profile sales are on the cards.

Mateus Fernandes is expected to fetch a huge sum as Man Utd and Spurs show an interest in the midfielder, and a host of other players could be on the way out as Nuno Espírito Santo looks to reshape the squad.

Ipswich Town interested in signing West Ham’s Max Kilman

Obviously, finances will dictate a lot of the business that West Ham do, but there will be players that Nuno wants to keep - and ones that he is happy to let go.

One player who is likely to fall into the latter category is Max Kilman, as the defender has endured a tough time in the two seasons he has had at West Ham following his big-money move from Wolves.

It had been hoped that reuniting with Nuno, who gave him his shot as a Premier League player at Molineux, would benefit Kilman, but he fell out of favour under the ex-Porto chief, to the extent that he failed to make the squad at points, and his last league appearance came at the end of January.

Therefore, a summer exit may suit all parties, and Football Insider has revealed that newly-promoted Ipswich are tracking Kilman.

They explain that the Tractor Boys are keen on a loan move for the defender, which would see Kilman link up with another former manager in Gary O’Neil, who has just succeeded Kieran McKenna at Portman Road.

So, he knows exactly what the defender is all about, and his character, with Ipswich likely to be in the market for at least one centre-back this summer.

In an ideal world, West Ham would find a permanent exit for Kilman, but that seems very unlikely due to his struggles over the past two years.

They wouldn’t get offers anywhere near the £40m they paid, and a sale would still likely represent a loss in the accounts, so a loan is the most realistic option.

Kilman still has five years to go on his contract with the Londoners, so to get him off the wage bill would be a help, even if it’s only for 12 months.

That would give Nuno and the recruitment team some wriggle room as they look to sign players, and it’s the best solution for Kilman from a football perspective as well.

He seems low on confidence with West Ham, and the fans are understandably frustrated at his performances when they consider the fee that was paid for him. So, the chance to move away, to join a club where he won’t be under the same scrutiny, and with a manager who knows him, could work out.
