According to L'Équipe, Iran's football federation, in a statement, condemned US Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin for celebrating the national team's World Cup elimination and referencing cancelled visas.

Iran went out in the group stage after a third draw, 1-1 with Egypt. At a press briefing, Mullin marked their departure, expressing relief that their campaign was over, delighting in visas being cancelled and the delegation being told to leave US soil, adding he may have sung and danced.

The federation accused US officials of mistreatment and lies, calling the remarks hostile. It argued the comments showed no respect for international law or the standards expected of a host nation.

It added that openly celebrating the exit reflected more on Mullin than on the team.

It also recalled that the head coach had earlier denounced “inhumane and unprofessional” treatment during the tournament. It concluded by referencing the US-Iran conflict, alleging that 168 children had been killed and that the world had been lied to, adding that nothing more from this person could surprise it.
