The Republic of Ireland and Czechia meet in Prague on Thursday in a FIFA World Cup 2026 UEFA qualifying play-off semi-final.
Ireland closed out their group in outstanding fashion, winning three games on the bounce to secure a play-off spot and completely shift the narrative around Hallgrímsson’s tenure.
They edged Armenia 1-0, then claimed an impressive 2-0 victory over 10-man Portugal in Dublin, before Troy Parrott’s hat-trick inspired a 3-2 win in a dramatic clash with Hungary in Budapest.
Head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson, who recently signed a new contract on the back of that strong finish, is set to stick with the same core ideas that brought Ireland this far.
With a fully fit squad available, he is likely to set the team up much as he did against Portugal and Hungary. However, Festy Ebosele and Liam Scales are both suspended, with Ryan Manning expected to come in for Scales at left wing-back.
Troy Parrott should again lead the line, while veteran defender Seamus Coleman is in line to start at the back, even if he is not yet ready to play the entire match.
Most of the rest of the XI picks itself: Jason Knight is tipped to replace the injured Josh Cullen in midfield New call-up Harvey Vale will be eager to make an impact on his debut, even if that contribution comes from the bench.
Possible Ireland starting XI: Kelleher; Coleman, O’Brien, Collins, O’Shea, Manning; Molumby, Knight, Azaz; Ogbene, Parrott.
The match will kick off at 7:45pm BST on Thursday, 26th March.
For viewers in the UK, Czechia vs Ireland will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video’s pay-per-view service.
