In just a few moments, the USMNT will battle Belgium for a place in the World Cup quarterfinals. If the Americans advance, they already know who their next opponent will be, and it is not one they wanted to face.
Should the USMNT defeat Belgium, they will take on the powerful Spain, which has just eliminated Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal thanks to a goal in the closing moments of the match.
With Folarin Balogun’s red card recently overturned, Mauricio Pochettino has all of his starters available. However, the question is whether he will use all of them.
Let’s remember that Christian Pulisic suffered a calf injury, so he could start on the bench, especially because Belgium plays a physical game that the USMNT has not truly faced yet.
But come on, how could Captain America not be in tonight’s starting lineup? A small joke for the readers.
Now, speaking seriously, Christian Pulisic is expected to be in the starting lineup as usual, with one small condition.
If the USMNT is winning comfortably, as happened in the group stage, do not be surprised if Mauricio Pochettino decides to take the No. 10 off as a precaution, especially to avoid an angry Belgian player injuring him.
Before the match, many anticipated an easy win for the United States, given Belgium’s tactical approach.
The Belgians prefer to control possession and dictate tempo through the midfield rather than playing down the flanks or long balls.
If Robinson and Dest manage to stop Doku and Trossard, the European side’s best players, McKennie and Adams, with help from Pulisic and Tillman, should be able to move through the game like they are walking around their own house.
Without disrespecting Belgium, since Eden Hazard stopped playing for the national team, their level has dropped considerably.
That does not mean the Belgians cannot pull off a surprise and utilize their international experience to take the win.
