Gustav Isaksen has undergone bilateral sports hernia surgery in Munich, becoming the fourth Lazio player in about a year to require groin repair.
Mattia Zaccagni was first last summer. Nicolo Rovella faced a similar issue at the start of the previous campaign and eventually opted for surgery. Danilo Cataldi followed at the end of the season and hopes to be ready when action resumes.
Isaksen initially tried to avoid the operation, then proceeded on Wednesday. He was the second Lazio player to have surgery that day, as goalkeeper Alessio Furlanetto underwent an ACL procedure.
The operation took place at the UM Hernienzentrum in Munich, carried out by Professor Joachim Conze in coordination with Professor Francesco Franceschi and club doctor Professor Pietro Monachino. Rehabilitation starts immediately.
No timetable was given, but groin surgery typically needs a couple of months, so Isaksen is likely to miss the start of the new season, a setback for Gennaro Gattuso who planned to rely on him as a starter.
Lazio had planned to sell Matteo Cancellieri, who has one year left on his deal, with Olympicos, Torino and Fiorentina among possible destinations. Isaksen’s absence could prompt a rethink unless a replacement settles quickly at Formello.
Tijjani Noslin could be used on the right wing until Isaksen returns.
