Chelsea are showing interest in Brighton and Hove Albion striker Danny Welbeck this summer.

The 35-year-old is heading into the final 12 months of his contract with the Seagulls, and Chelsea are now exploring a move for the English forward.

As reported by David Ornstein of The Athletic, Welbeck appeals to Blues manager Xabi Alonso as both a player and leader.

Chelsea's young dressing room would be boosted by a senior figurehead, which they have targeted all summer amidst the failed pursuit of Sunderland midfielder and captain Granit Xhaka. John Stones, 31, is also under consideration.

It's suggested there is optimism among all parties that a deal for Welbeck to move to Stamford Bridge could be finalised, although it's at an early stage.

Brighton are aware of Chelsea's interest, and Welbeck is thought to be keen on a move to west London.

Should Welbeck make the transfer, it would spell an end to Chelsea's worries of facing the former Manchester United forward.

Against no side has Welbeck scored more Premier League goals than he has against Chelsea (7), while his five at Stamford Bridge are his most at an away venue.

What would Danny Welbeck's arrival mean for Chelsea's other strikers?

Chelsea currently have Joao Pedro, Nicolas Jackson, Emmanuel Emegha, Liam Delap and Marc Guiu on their books.

With Joao Pedro the number one choice in attack, spots in Chelsea's team under Alonso are up for grabs.

However, Welbeck's arrival will mean uncertainty for the other strikers, as revealed by The Athletic.

Liam Delap, who joined from Ipswich Town last summer, is still keen to prove himself this season after an injury setback last term, while Emmanuel Emegha, who has only just joined from BlueCo sister club RC Strasbourg, is recovering from a muscle injury. Both will want to be part of Alonso's plans.

Meanwhile, Marc Guiu is expected to leave, either on loan or on a permanent basis, with a valuation of around £25 million touted.

Nicolas Jackson was left out of Chelsea's pre-season tour of Australia, leaving his future unclear after returning from a loan spell in Germany at Bayern Munich. Aston Villa have expressed an interest.

Welbeck is familiar with Joao Pedro after the pair played together at Brighton before Pedro moved to Stamford Bridge.

With more incomings, outgoings must be finalised to ensure Chelsea have a balanced squad heading into 26-27, especially because of not qualifying for any European football.
