England boss knows exactly how Postecoglou will be feeling after his own experiences in recent years

Postecoglou was dismissed by Spurs on Friday as chairman Daniel Levy and the board made the difficult decision to part ways with the Australian.

Postecoglou had delivered Tottenham’s first major trophy in 17 years by guiding them to Europa League glory this season but the club will now look for a replacement, with the decision to sack him largely based on his side’s 17th-place finish and 22 defeats in the Premier League.

England manager Tuchel, whose side face Andorra in a World Cup qualifier in Barcelona on Saturday, is no stranger to a managerial sacking, having been dismissed from his two most recent jobs, at Chelsea and, latterly, Bayern Munich.

“That’s the job, basically,” Tuchel said of Tottenham’s decision to sack Postecoglou despite him winning the Europa League.

“I feel for every manager and I have huge sympathy for every manager, especially in these moments. I was in the same spot, and it feels horrible.

“It just shows it is not only about titles. If your connections with the club, the board, is strong, you can survive seasons without titles.

“If there is slight disbelief or the trust is not there anymore, then it is sometimes not even enough to win a trophy after so many years.

“I have the biggest respect for him. He has a huge character. He said he will deliver the trophy in the second year. He did. But this is part of the job. We are responsible for the results and the development of the team.

“Whether we like it or not, sometimes it is us who take the full responsibility for the development that is maybe not at the highest potential.”
