The president of the Italian FA (FIGC), Gabriele Gravina, has stepped down following Italy's failure to reach the 2026 World Cup.
Despite winning the European Championships in 2020, Italy have been absent from the world stage since 2014 and failure to qualify for an expanded 2026 edition is a new low for the Azzurri.
Gennaro Gattuso's side reached the play-off final and were leading 1-0 away to Bosnia & Herzegovina. However a red card allowed the hosts to level and then book their spot in this summer's tournament after a penalty shoot-out.
Gravina had been in his role since his 2018, overseeing the appointments of both Luciano Spalletti and Gattuso with the latter yet to make a decision about his future although he is also expected to leave his role.
That is also true of Gianluigi Buffon who also has a senior role with the Italian national team.
