Italian football endured a bleak night as Bologna and Fiorentina were knocked out on Thursday, leaving no Italian club in any European semi-final.

Bologna exited the Europa League in the quarter-finals after another heavy loss to Aston Villa, 1-3. Fiorentina then failed to claw back their deficit against Crystal Palace in the Europa Conference League quarter-finals, the tie reading 3-0 and 2-1. According to L'Équipe, it is the first time since 2018-2019.

Counting only seasons with three European competitions, the last occurrence was 1986-1987.

The downturn had begun in the previous Champions League round. Atalanta, the final Italian club left in the competition, were beaten 1-4 by Bayern Munich in the round of 16.

The European setbacks mirror the Nazionale's struggles, with Italy missing the World Cup for the third time running after losing in the play-offs to Bosnia.
