Italy could revise their play-off squad after Gianluca Scamacca’s injury, and a replacement has not yet been confirmed.

La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that Daniel Maldini is the likeliest candidate should Gennaro Gattuso add an extra player. The coach still has 27 players available, so a call-up is not guaranteed.

Gattuso had already named his group for the decisive steps towards 2026 World Cup qualification, but Scamacca then suffered a muscular issue in training. The adductor lesion in his right leg rules him out for several weeks.

Alessandro Bastoni will not be in Inter’s squad to face Fiorentina this weekend, and will undergo tests with the national-team staff to assess whether he could recover for the play-offs.

Maldini is more of a support striker than a centre-forward, but Maurizio Sarri has used him up front since his January move to Lazio. The 24-year-old has one goal and three assists in 19 competitive games this season.
