Sheffield Wednesday fan pundit Patrick has had his say after it was revealed John Textor has not made progress in a deal to buy the club.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
John Textor has held talks with Dejphon Chansiri over potentially buying Sheffield Wednesday, but any deal has ‘not progressed’.
The Owls are in turmoil off the pitch, with Chansiri having failed to pay the September wages on time, meaning it’s the fifth time in seven months that the players haven’t received their salaries when they were due.
As a result, Wednesday are facing a points deduction, and many fans are regularly protesting as they try to force the Thai businessman to sell the club.
Despite Chansiri claiming he is open to selling the Yorkshire outfit, no deal appears close, and the Daily Mail has revealed that Textor isn’t close to buying the club.
The 60-year-old, who owns clubs across the world, is keen on buying the Owls, but the latest update states that after discussions with Chansiri, a potential agreement is a ‘long way off’.
Obviously, this wasn’t the news that Sheffield Wednesday fans wanted, and when asked by FLW about whether he was disappointed by this development, fan pundit Patrick explained that he refused to get carried away given how difficult Chansiri appears to be to deal with.
“I don’t think disappointed would be the right word at this stage. I’ve completely given up any hope of Chansiri selling the club to anybody, and I do feel that it’s going to be a case that it’s dragged out of his hands by the new football regulator.
“It seems obvious that Chansiri feels that if he can’t have the club then nobody else can, so he wants to hold on to it despite the misery he knows he is causing to fans, players and non-playing staff. He simply doesn’t care that the value of the club is plummeting day by day.
“His horrendous decision making and mismanagement continue to make us a less attractive proposition. There’s a level of spite with Chansiri, so any takeover rumour, whilst I did get my hopes in the past that he might finally sell, I can now only imagine any negotiations would have been tiresome for Textor and his team, with the goalposts constantly moving on numerous occasions, and the sheer stubbornness from Chansiri.
“So, it’s really a case of the club being taken from him and not sold by him. I’m absolutely desperate for someone to buy the club but if you don’t get your hopes up, then I suppose you shouldn’t be disappointed. But I truly hope the day Chansiri leaves the club is closer.”
You can understand why Wednesday fans are sceptical about any update, because they have zero trust in Chansiri and there will be doubts over his intention to sell for what many would see as a reasonable price.
Whilst Textor has caused some controversies in the past, he would offer a reason for optimism and hope for Wednesday fans if he did buy the club, as supporters will be fearing for the future of the club right now.
The constant late payment of wages is unacceptable, and even though Henrik Pedersen and the players deserve huge credit for battling on in such challenging circumstances, the reality is that relegation feels inevitable when you consider the points deduction that is likely to be applied.
So, the future for Wednesday is bleak at the moment, and that outlook isn’t going to change until Chansiri has sold up.
