John Stones says he would never have believed everything he’s achieved with Manchester City would have been possible when he arrived.
The England international will leave the Etihad Stadium this summer after 10 magnificent years in sky blue.
A classy centre-back, Stones joined City in Pep Guardiola’s first summer as boss as a 22-year-old and has since gone on to play a key role in 20 major honours.
That’s included an astonishing six Premier League titles as well as starring in the 2022/23 Champions League triumph as part of a Treble season that is regarded as the greatest in City history.
Adored by fans and team-mates alike and roundly admired for his ability on the ball as much as off it, Stones heads for pastures new with his status as a Club legend secured.
In an emotional final interview as a City player, Stones made it clear that his decade at City was above and beyond any ambitions he had when he joined.
“I honestly could never have dreamt of doing the things that I’ve done or to the magnitude of what we’ve done and how we’ve done it,” he began.
“If you’d said to me before I came here, you’re going to do all these things, I wouldn’t even have thought half.
“I’m just so grateful and proud that I’ve had incredible people around me throughout it that have been able to celebrate that with me.
“I’m so proud as well to be able to give these experiences to every die-hard City fan, everyone that’s involved with the Club, everyone that has all the difficult moments with us that are in around us every day. It’s just as much for everyone like that.
“It’s been a roller coaster. You can look at it like that and everything has ups and downs and good things, bad things.
“But to live out all my dreams and all my goals and all the things that I set out to achieve as a player and live as a player.
“Doing that has just been a dream and to be able to give that to everyone and do it in the style and fashion that we have and make everyone’s dream come true with obviously that Treble season, something that the club’s never achieved or won.
“It’s been so special.”
As Stones looks to the future and the rest of his playing career, he insists the fact he’s leaving City hasn’t quite hit home to this point.
“Everything comes to an end and I wish it’d go on forever, but I know that that’s not a possibility,” he said.
“It’s tough, but at the same time, I can look back on the 10 years and I’m so proud of what I’ve achieved and what I’ve done here.
“The memories that I’ve got with absolutely everyone, not just the players, the staff, the fans, the guys that we all see on a daily basis and you’ve become friends with and have bonds with.
“It’s not sunk in yet, but when I leave I think it will and it’ll hit me.”
